The Complete Guide to Playing Online Craps

Online craps is a fun and exciting way to win money online. Even though a virtual craps table can look intimidating, anyone can play. All it takes to be successful at playing online craps is understanding the basics. Once you have a solid understanding of the basics of the game, you can move on to playing with more advanced strategies that have the potential to help you gain larger profits.

How to Play Online Craps

The object of online craps is to accurately guess the sum of two dice each time they are rolled. Since there are so many ways to bet and strategies you can use to play, online craps can get complicated. The good news is craps is only as complicated as you make it. In its simplest form, playing craps is a three-step process.

Step One: Placing Your Bet

When placing your bet, you have two options: the pass line and the don’t pass line. When you bet on the pass line, you place your bet in favor of the shooter. The don’t pass line bets against the shooter.

Placing your wager on one of these lines is easy: place your bet on one of the lines on the table and cross your fingers for step two, the come out roll.

Step Two: The Come Out Roll

In online craps, when you click to roll the dice for the first time in the game, it is called the come out roll. Depending on the sum of the two dice, several outcomes are possible:

  • 7 or 11: automatic win for wagers on the pass line, automatic loss for wagers on the don’t pass line
  • 2 or 3: automatic loss for wagers on the pass line, automatic win for wagers on the don’t pass line
  • 12: automatic loss for wagers on the pass line, “push” for wagers on the don’t pass line (no money is lost or won)
  • 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10: establishes the “point” - whichever number is rolled is marked with an “on” chip on the table

Step Three: The Point

If a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 is rolled on the come out roll, the point is established and players move to the second phase of the game. When a point is established, the goal of the game is to roll the number again before a 7 is rolled. There are three possible scenarios once a point is established:

  • A number other than 7 or the point is rolled:
  • Point is rolled before 7: automatic win for wagers on the pass line, automatic loss for wagers on the don’t pass line
  • 7 is rolled before the point: automatic loss for wagers on the pass line, automatic win for wagers on the don’t pass line

Now that you know the basics of how to play online craps, you can use your knowledge to start winning some money. If you want to rake in even more cash, though, there are many other ways you can bet to maximize your profits. In the next section, we will dive into the betting rules you should know.

Betting Rules

When it comes to betting in online craps, there are twelve major bets on the table that you need to know. Knowing how and when to place each bet is the best way to maximize your winnings. The more you know, in other words, the more you can win.

Come

  • Come: Placing a bet on the come line is similar to betting on the pass line. This action wagers that the shooter will roll a 7 or 11 before the point is rolled again.
  • Don’t come: The don’t come line wagers that the shooter will roll a 2 or 3 before a 7 or 11. If a 12 is rolled, the bet is pushed. If any other number is rolled, a secondary point number is established, and the goal shifts to rolling a 7 or 11 before the secondary point is rolled again.
  • Place: Place bets wager that a certain number will be rolled before a 7.
  • Buy: Buy bets are identical to place bets buy pay out at a higher amount, but a commission is paid to the casino for this bet. You should generally only place a buy bet on a 4 or a 10.
  • Field: Field bets wager certain numbers on a single roll. If a 3,4, 9,10, or 11 is rolled, players are paid out 1:1. Rolling a 2 pays double and 12 pays triple. If a 5, 6,7, or 8 is rolled, it constitutes an automatic loss.
  • Free Odds/Laying the Odds: After placing a pass or come bet, players can “lay the odds”. This wager bets that the shooter will roll a specific number before a 7.
  • Big Six and Big Eight: This wager pays out when a 6 or 8 is rolled before a 7.
  • Hardways: Hardways bets wager that a certain number will be rolled before a 7 and that both dice will be identical, such as two 3’s for a total of six.
  • Two or Twelve: Since the 2 and 12 are the most difficult numbers to land in craps due to the limited amount of dice combinations available, this bet is one of the most lucrative. When a bet is placed on a 2 or 12, the number must come out in the very next roll, or the player loses. If the player wins, the payout is 30:1.
  • Three or Eleven: Much like the 2 or 12 bet, players win if a 3 or 11 is rolled on the next roll after their bet is placed. Any other number rolled constitutes a loss.
  • Any Seven: Any seven indicates that the player predicts that the very next roll will result in the number 7 being rolled. Since seven is the number with combinations, this bet has the highest probability of winning on any given roll.
  • Any Craps: Numbers 2, 3, and 12 are commonly referred to as “craps numbers”. When a player places a bet on any craps, they are wagering that the next roll will add up to one of these numbers.

Online Craps Tips and Strategies

Once you are familiar with all the different ways to place bets on an online craps table, you can move on to implementing a strategy to help you win more money. This involves combining certain bets for the most desirable outcome.

Pass and Come, Plus Odds

Placing a bet on the pass line is one of the most common bets in online craps since it has some of the best odds in the game. Since there is no house edge on odds bets, the idea is to bet as much as you can on the odds. The idea behind this bet is to increase your chances of winning by choosing to bet on the lines that have the least house advantage. However, a losing round could be painful, since more money is on the table when you combine two bets at once.

Don’t Pass and Don’t Come, Plus Laying Odds

Betting on the don’t pass and don’t come lines while laying odds is the bet that has the least house edge of all the bets in craps, which is what makes this strategy so attractive. The only downside to this betting strategy is that even if you place table minimum bets, your total wager can be quite large, which is a risk to lose more money than you would if you opted to place single bets.

“Place” Bets on 6 and 8

Second only to 7, 6, and 8 are the most common rolls that occur in craps. When you place bets on 6 and 8, you essentially pick your own point numbers instead of waiting for the shooter to do so. Since these numbers are so commonly rolled, you have a pretty good chance at winning, too.

Pass with Odds, Plus 6 and/or 8

If you want to bet with odds, but you can’t afford or don’t want to place bets on the pass and come or don’t pass and don’t come lines, this strategy is for you. To begin, place a bet on the pass line. Once the point is established, place an odds bet for as much as you can afford.

  • If the point is 6 or 8: place bet goes on whichever number the point is not
  • If the point is neither 6 nor 8: place bet goes on both numbers

Hedge Bets

Hedge bets are an example of a strategy that aims to protect players’ bets if a roll doesn’t go as planned. This involves placing a bet on any seven simultaneously to making a place bet. This effectively pays whether the place number is rolled or a seven is rolled before the place number. This strategy is not fool-proof, though. Since any seven bets are only effective for one roll, to take advantage of the protection, you would have to place a bet on any sevens each time a number other than your place number or 7 is rolled, which could get costly.

The Iron Cross

This strategy is designed to help winners win fast and walk away. The idea behind this strategy is to cover as many numbers as possible, win on the first roll, collect your winnings, and leave the table. Here’s how it works:

  • Place a field bet (covers 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, and 12)
  • Execute place bets on 5, 6, and 8

Using this betting strategy wins on 30 of the possible 36 rolls of a dice, which are pretty good odds. However, should you lose a round playing the Iron Cross method, your losses are far larger than your wins would be.

Don’t Pass Plus Lay Odds, with Lay 4 and 10

This strategy involves placing a bet on the don’t pass line. Once a point is established, lay odds are placed on it. If the point is a 4, odds are layed on the 10. If the point is a 10, odds are layed on the 4. If the point is neither, odds are placed on the 4 and the 10. This strategy keeps your overall bet amount low while taking advantage of a low house edge, which gives you more of a chance to win.

Frequently Asked Questions

Betting on the pass line is the most common bet in craps. Since the game revolves around camaraderie, most players are in favor of betting with the shooter. It also simplifies the game, which makes it the best online craps bet for beginners.
2Is online craps rigged?
Online craps games operate using a random number generator, which helps to ensure that each game is fair, and certainly not rigged.

5Is a 7 good or bad in craps?
During a come out roll, a 7 is desirable since everyone on the pass line wins, and most people bet on the pass line. After the come out roll, 7 is usually not desirable since the point needs to come out first for players betting on the pass line to win.

I would say it’s a good alternative if you can’t make it to a casino!

I love casino games in all ways, shapes, and forms, so when I heard about online craps, I just had to try it. I will say, there’s something special about playing craps at the casino and hearing all the cheering and booing, but online craps has been fun, too. I would say it’s a good alternative if you can’t make it to a casino!

I may never go back and lose my money again, LOL!

I just started playing online craps last week after losing every time I go to the casino lately. This game is so much fun, and I have won more money playing online this week than I have any week last month at the casino. I may never go back and lose my money again, LOL!

I can play online craps while the kids nap

As a mom to twins, I don’t get a lot of time to play games, much less go to the casino. My husband and I used to love to go out and shoot dice before we had the babies. Now, I can play online craps while the kids nap, which is close enough to the real thing for me.

The game sure has changed,

The game sure has changed, y’all,  since I used to play in the back allies in high school! We used to call it a side bet when you added extra bets into the mix. I can’t get out much anymore since I’m an old man now, but playing online craps helps me enjoy life without sacrificing the things I enjoy doing.

Been playing craps since I was in my 20’s.

Been playing craps since I was in my 20’s. This online craps game is the closest to the real thing that I’ve been able to find. If you choose to play craps, trust your gut and instincts on when and when not to bet, it could be the difference between winning big and walking away with nothing.
